Programme for the year 2008
It is planned to continue using telephone conferencing to facilitate regular communication between Committee Members so that activities can be co-ordinated and positions agreed on issues that emerge during the year. Telephone conference calls will be held every month except when face-to-face meetings are held.
Three face-to-face Committee Meetings are planned for the year. The first will be held in conjunction with the AGM. The second will be held at the time of the IMO AGM in Killarney in April and at least one other will be held later in the year.
Apart from these meetings, it is planned to continue to be active on environmental issues related to health in Ireland and internationally:
- IDEA’s Focal Topics for 2008 will be: Global Warming /Climate Change; Nanotechnology & Health;
- Committee members will write articles and letters on IDEA’s focal topics for 2008 and other topical issues of concern in both the medical and the lay press.
- The Association will also take part in both local and national radio programmes, when the opportunity arises.
- The Association will continue to seek involvement in national fora addressing issues of concern to it.
- The Association will further strengthen its contacts with the Food Safety Authority of Ireland and the Environmental Protection Agency.
- The Association will attend and propose relevant motions at the IMO AGM at Easter in Killarney.
- The Association will continue to be active in the International Society of Doctors for the Environment (ISDE), Health Care Without Harm (HCWH) and the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW), and to join other international groups that are felt to be appropriate.
- The Association will continue to be represented at relevant international meetings on environmental issues, particularly those related to Chemicals in the Environment, Non-Ionising Electromagnetic Radiation, Nuclear Disarmament and Power and POPs.
The findings of the research into the effects of electro-magnetic radiation will be publicised and followed up on.
*****
The overall role for IDEA in 2008 will be to continue to highlight the potential impact of changes in the environment on health of people in Ireland.
